Week 2, day 2

 For day 2 Sam and I set off to Newport Rhode Island for a nationally broadcasted boat race, the reason we went to this boat race is because of one of our mentors, Jen Mccann, told us to come when we visited URI. So once we got there, there was a whole festival going on with food trucks, exotic cars on display ( which sam and I found very intriguing ), helly hanson shops because it was sponsored by them, and then more massive shops for the boat racing. We were able to see the boats that were docked and didn’t get to see any thay were coming in, which would’ve been really cool because they are super large sailboats that are modified to go extremely fast to the point where they hover over the water. it’s actually incredible. Anyways the whole reason Jen invited us was because all the ships during the race ( I should mention that these ships go around the world in the span on a few months, and newport was just a destination ) these ships during the race all have a purpose for the environment, and one of the ships deals with micro plastics and the pollution of plastics in the water. and everyday they set off and they collect plastics, and micro plastics from the ocean and examine it and study it to give off theories on how much micro plastics there could be in the ocean because they are essentially traveling across the whole ocean. So we were hoping we could even get a chance to talk with those people who are on thay boat, but they were too slow and weren’t there yet. So fun experience to see and learn about.

week 1 reflection

 This week, Sam and I were traveling a lot to go meet up with people we reached out to months back and we also stayed local this week a couple of days and did some fishing and also did some beach cleaning. On Monday, Sam and I didn't have anything scheduled so we decided to go to numerous different beaches and clean up the beaches, specifically looking for plastics and fishing nets, which we were successful with. At the end of the day we gathered a lot of trash, separated the trash into separate piles to show the diversity, and then took a video of it for our blog. The next day, Tuesday, we went to the store and bought fishing gear, after about an hour we went to the ocean off a spot Sams mother recommended and attempted to catch a fish for about 2-3 hours, that didn't end up working out very well so we went to a different spot and tried there for about 2 more hours and had no luck at all. Day 1

Today we gathered data from working on multiple beaches and gathered lots of scattered plastics and random items from the beaches we worked on, we also contacted a few professionals on the study of micro plastics and got meetings set up for the next week. The beaches that we went to were not very populated but we were able to grab multiple fishing nets scattered from fishing boats, random plastics that people left at the beach, and a load of plastic bottles and cans. The first beach we went to we covered the whole beach which took us close to 2 and a half hours, the second beach that we traveled to was an extremely large beach but by the time we got there it was closed so we had the whole beach to ourselves because we just informed the worker that we were cleaning it for a school project. Week 2, day 3

 Today Sam and I traveled over to WHOI again to meet with a doctor, Dr. Moore. Dr. Moore is not in the field that we are researching, micro plastics, but he still works with apart of our project, pollution. He researches the pollution and how it affects whales, specifically right whales, and how they get affected by lobster and snow crab traps and lines. He had a lot to say about how close right whales are getting to becoming extinct, he expressed serious sadness because he’s been working on this issue for over 30 years and as Dr. Moore puts it “it hasn’t gotten better the way it’s supposed to” the reason he was so down about this is because humans are the ones who are ruining this beautiful animals existence, with not only the brutal cruelty of the traps and lines, but mostly the propellers from ships. These cause most the deaths of whales, and also, starvation, because of climate change and water temperature change. Back to the traps and lines, the reason this pollution is so harmful
